Lewis County: How many students met or exceeded expectations in the English Language Arts test in 2021-22 school year?

Of the 1,541 students in Lewis County who took the 2021-22 English Language Arts test, 29.1% met expectations and 17.7% did better than expected, according to the New York State Education Department.

In total, 46.8% of the students met or exceeded expections in Lewis County, a decrease of 4.4% compared to the previous school year.

Within the county, Lowville Middle School students performed the best in English Language Arts, with 61% of them considered proficient in the subject. Meanwhile, Beaver River Elementary School students fared the worst, with only 24% passing the test.

The state registered an overall proficiency rate of 49% of students who met or exceeded expectations.

A 2021 report from the NYC Center for Innovation Through Data Intelligence found that outcomes for different racial and gender groups had improved since 2013. However, despite the improvements, significant gaps still persist, particularly among Black and Hispanic students.
