Assemblyman Scott Gray, representing Watertown, recently participated in an Assembly Update with Assembly Radio-TV Producer Ted Flint. The discussion focused on current state budget negotiations and significant legislative matters.

With the state budget deadline of April 1 approaching, Gray highlighted ongoing debates regarding Article VII provisions. Key issues include a proposed statewide school cell phone ban and changes to discovery laws. Gray stressed the importance of implementing "common-sense solutions that balance safety and accountability," specifically in relation to the governor's initiative to prohibit the use of face masks for criminal activities.

Gray also commented on the implications of Executive Order 47.3, which previously blocked 2,000 terminated correctional officers from future employment within state and local positions. After facing considerable opposition, the governor plans to allow this order to expire on April 9, enabling local authorities to recommence hiring.

Further, Gray expressed apprehension about the Extended Producer Responsibility Act. This act would enforce costly packaging reforms across multiple industries, potentially leading to increased consumer prices at grocery stores and other retail outlets. Gray warned that such policies could exacerbate the cost of living and business operations in New York.
