H. Vincent Poor of Princeton University to Present the New Horizons in Engineering Distinguished Lectureship Series at Clarkson UniversityClarkson University is proud to announce that Dr. H. Vincent Poor will speak on April 13 at 2:30 p.m. in the multipurpose rooms (MPRs) in the Student Center. Prior to the event, there will be a reception at 2 p.m. The public is most welcome to attend.
Smart grid is a term applied to an emerging generation of the electricity grid in which a cyber-infrastructure of computers, networks, sensors, and controls, is overlaid on the electromechanical infrastructure of the traditional grid. This transformation aims to make the grid more efficient and secure, to allow for the integration of renewable energy sources and distributed storage capabilities, and to give consumers a greater role in managing their energy resources.
This talk will describe this so-called “internet of energy”, beginning with a brief introduction to how electric energy is currently produced and distributed, followed by an overview of emerging and possible future smart grid technologies, including their potential impact on our energy infrastructure and some challenges associated with their introduction.
Dr. H. Vincent Poor is the Michael Henry Strater University Professor at Princeton University, where his interests include information theory, machine learning and network science, and their applications in wireless networks, energy systems and related fields. During 2006 to 2016, he served as the Dean of Princeton’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. Prior to joining Princeton in 1990, he was on the faculty of the University of Illinois, and he has also held visiting appointments at several other universities, including Berkeley, Cambridge, Harvard and Stanford, among others. Dr. Poor is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences, and is a Foreign Member of the Royal Society, and other national and international academies. Recognition of his work includes the 2017 IEEE Alexander Graham Medal, and honorary doctorates from a number of universities in Asia, Europe and North America, including Syracuse University in 2017 and the University of Waterloo in 2019.
Dr. H. Vince Poor will be the 22nd Distinguished Lecturer in Clarkson University's New Horizons in Engineering series, which is dedicated to improving the understanding of important issues facing engineering and society in the 21st Century.
