With the first snow fall for most of St. Lawrence County arriving yesterday and another big snow fall in the weather predictions for the rest of the week. The St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that roadways and travel times for daily commutes maybe extended longer than normal due to road conditions. The Sheriff’s Office recommends the following safety tips during winter commutes to remain safe and reach you destination safety without incident.
Know your vehicles limits and your driving limits. Knowing both limits can give you a good sense of how fast your speed should be while operating on less then ideal roadways.Check the weather prior to your commute to determine weather conditions along your route to provide knowledge of delays and determine your travel time for your commute.Allow yourself extra time to reach your destination, in the case that you are delayed for your commute due to road conditions. Giving yourself that extra time to reach your destination can provide a safe travel speed and being aware of traffic hazards on the roadway.Ask yourself do I have the proper equipment or attire in case I become stuck on the side of the roadway? Having extra clothing, food, and a blanket could assist with being stuck along the side of the roadway for an extend length of time.Ensure you vehicle is prepared for winter travel. This might include having snow tires, snow removed from it prior to travel, and ensure all mechanical problems are resolved to reduce the chances of becoming a disabled vehicle on the side of the road.Keep your eyes on the road. Remaining focused on the road is imperative during winter time driving. Meaning don’t text, call, or become distracted while driving on snow covered roads. If you do not have to be out, do not go out. If you can wait until roadways are cleared by department of transportation crews of all traffic hazards then wait. It can make travel much easier and less difficult.Be mindful of all emergency and department of transportation personal. If you come upon emergency or department of transportation personal attempting to clear the roadway. Give an extra amount of space and reduce speed to ensure the safety of everyone.
