Senator Mark Walczyk has expressed strong opposition to Senate Bill S6530, which proposes restrictions on the expansion of dairy farms in New York. According to Walczyk, the bill is an attempt by New York City lawmakers to interfere with rural life and threatens the livelihoods of farmers who play a crucial role in the state’s economy.

The proposed legislation seeks to prevent the Department of Environmental Conservation from issuing permits for new or expanding Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), which are large-scale dairy farms essential for meeting New York’s increasing demand for dairy products. Senator Walczyk argues that these restrictions would hinder farmers’ ability to grow their businesses and negatively impact local economies.

“Let’s be clear: this bill makes no sense,” stated Senator Walczyk. He questioned why city lawmakers are imposing mandates on rural communities and suggested they focus on urban areas instead. Walczyk emphasized that farmers need support rather than obstacles, warning that such legislation could drive farms out of New York.

Walczyk highlighted the growing demand for dairy products from companies like Chobani, Kraft, and Hood, which require more milk to sustain their operations. He argued that arbitrary restrictions would stifle opportunity and innovation among farmers.

“These City politicians need a lesson on where their food comes from,” he added, stressing the importance of agriculture as New York’s leading industry.

Jay Matteson, Agricultural Coordinator for Jefferson County, supported Walczyk’s position and invited Assemblywoman Rosenthal and Senator Brisport to visit local dairy farms. Matteson noted the significant economic contribution of agriculture in counties like Jefferson, Lewis, Oswego, and St. Lawrence.

“This is not just about dairy; it’s about the future of farming in New York,” concluded Senator Walczyk. He vowed to continue opposing what he considers “ridiculous legislation.”
