In response to recent developments from the New York State Department of Civil Service concerning the cancellation of health insurance for Corrections Officers (COs), Senator Mark Walczyk has voiced significant concerns regarding the state’s handling of its frontline workers. This issue arises following a February strike where thousands of COs demanded safer working conditions.

The abrupt revocation of health insurance for COs, who face daily risks and advocated for better safety measures, has sparked alarm. Many COs only discovered their insurance was canceled when seeking medical care, leaving families without coverage. “I am amazed at how easy it is for those who advocate for universal healthcare to strip away coverage from individuals they disagree with, and even more amazed that they documented it,” stated Senator Walczyk.

Senator Walczyk reached out to Commissioner Daniel Martuscello for clarity on why COBRA coverage was denied. The Department classified striking employees as AWOL and deemed the strike “gross misconduct,” which Senator Walczyk criticizes as inadequate reasoning. He remarked on Governor Hochul’s actions, saying, “It’s particularly disheartening to see Governor Hochul taking health insurance away from kids of Corrections Officers. Real motherly.”

Additionally, legislative efforts to support Corrections Officers’ safety have stalled. Proposals like repealing the HALT Act and bills such as S5009 and S4560 have not progressed due to opposition from Albany Democrats and Governor Hochul’s administration. The “death gamble” benefit bill (S6406) aimed at retaining experienced officers was vetoed twice by the Governor.

“The inaction on these critical issues reflects a blatant disregard for the safety and rights of those who serve on the front lines of public safety,” said Senator Walczyk. He emphasized that canceling health insurance is not just an oversight but undermines dedicated state employees’ rights.
