A budget extender is expected to be presented on the Senate floor in response to the state’s failure to meet the annual budget deadline on April 1. Senator Walczyk criticized the Governor’s decision to grant a “message of necessity” to enforce the budget extender, which he described as a reaction to “incompetence and lateness.”
“For the third consecutive year, we are forced to rely on an extender, showing a failure to address the real issues that impact our communities—namely affordability,” Walczyk stated. He criticized the focus of the leaders on “non-budgetary policy” instead of effective government operation, noting, “None of the leaders are talking about cutting costs anywhere.”
According to Walczyk, under single-party control since 2019, the state’s budget has increased by 30%. He labeled the proposed $259 billion spending level as reckless, noting it lacks discussions on spending control. Walczyk said, “New York is already leading the nation in outmigration, crippling our local economies and forcing families to tighten their belts while bloating the state’s spending plan. It’s not sustainable and the people of New York deserve better.”
