State Senator Mark Walczyk has expressed strong opposition to Governor Kathy Hochul’s recent decision to terminate numerous correctional officers across New York State. In a statement, Senator Walczyk criticized the governor’s actions, saying they undermine the correctional system and negatively impact staff morale.

“Governor Hochul has once again demonstrated she’s unfit,” Walczyk stated. He emphasized that firing correctional officers and canceling health insurance for their children is a “betrayal of employees who wear the state flag on their uniform and do a dangerous job to keep the rest of us safe.”

Senator Walczyk highlighted existing staffing shortages and described the governor’s decision as “stupid,” claiming it undermines the entire system. He also pointed out that Governor Hochul has not addressed issues such as drug inflow in facilities or listened to staff concerns about separating violent reoffenders from other inmates.

Walczyk warned of potentially disastrous consequences for inmates, staff, and corrections officers due to these decisions. He noted that corrections officers have been advocating for safety improvements and better working conditions, wanting to safely return home after each shift.

The senator criticized the deployment of the National Guard in what he describes as a dangerous environment without a clear resolution. He compared this situation to how private sector businesses would be held accountable if they treated employees similarly.

“These COs are employees of New York, and their concerns about safety are entirely valid. They deserve better,” Walczyk asserted. He called on Governor Hochul to demonstrate empathy, common sense, and leadership by addressing these issues effectively.
