In response to a projected $750 million funding gap, Senator Mark Walczyk has criticized Governor Kathy Hochul and Albany Democrats for what he describes as reckless spending. Walczyk questions the necessity of this financial situation, attributing New York’s fiscal issues to an oversized budget and corrupt processes.
Senator Walczyk proposes Senate Bill S4959, which aims to establish the Commission on Government Efficiency (COGE). This bipartisan commission would identify and eliminate wasteful expenditures in the state budget. “New York’s budget was 40 days late and rammed through with little transparency,” he stated. He believes that by scrutinizing state spending, the funding gap could be closed quickly.
Walczyk highlights inefficiencies within state agencies acknowledged by Governor Hochul. He urges support for his bill to ensure tax dollars are spent wisely. “If COGE was on the books right now, it would save the State BILLIONS,” he asserted.
As an example of questionable spending, Walczyk points to the Empire State Film Tax Credit program, which increased to $800 million despite criticisms over its return on investment. “It is unacceptable that while families struggle, New York continues to give handouts to Hollywood elites,” he said.
Additionally, Walczyk criticizes a $1 billion increase for NYSERDA’s green energy fund and $3 billion earmarked for inflation rebate checks. He argues these measures do not address New York’s reliance on federal funding. “Gimmicky rebate checks and more grants for green energy consultants in California won’t right the ship financially in New York,” he concluded.
