Many have been discussing the affordability of living in New York, but recent legislative actions suggest a different reality. The session saw the passage of A.8888, which mandates electric-only hookups for homes and businesses. This decision has raised concerns about limiting consumer choice and increasing costs.
Another piece of legislation, A.8332, was also passed. It restricts how much revenue local governments can collect from renewable energy projects. Critics argue that this could lead to homeowners and small businesses bearing more financial responsibility for local services and infrastructure.
Despite these developments, some unfavorable bills were not passed during the session. The costly HEAT Act and the extended producer responsibility bill known as PRRIA did not move forward.
Reflecting on the session’s challenges, it was described as both busy and difficult. “As always,” it remains an honor to serve the people of St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties.
