New York State Senator Mark Walczyk and Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan have introduced a bill to establish the New York State Commission on Government Efficiency (COGE). The legislation aims to enhance fiscal responsibility by examining state spending, identifying wasteful expenditures, and issuing recommendations for eliminating inefficiencies.
Senator Walczyk emphasized the need for wise spending of taxpayer money: “The hard-earned money of New York taxpayers deserves to be spent wisely and efficiently. By creating this commission, we aim to shine a light on government waste and inefficiencies that have long plagued our state’s fiscal operations. It’s time to ensure that every dollar spent is justified and contributes to the well-being of our citizens.”
Assemblyman Gallahan pointed out the rapid increase in the state budget, which has grown by $76.7 billion over five years—a 43.8% rise from $175.3 billion in 2020-21 to a proposed $252 billion budget. He stated, “New York taxpayers are being forced to foot the bill for wasteful government spending, while our roads crumble, businesses flee, and residents struggle to make ends meet.”
The proposed bill (S.4959/A.6089) addresses several instances of perceived wasteful spending. Among them is the $700 million Empire State Film Tax Credit as part of a larger $7.7 billion in handouts to the film industry, criticized for its lack of significant return on investment for taxpayers.
Additionally, tourism projects have been questioned due to empty hotel rooms in Adirondack hotels despite investments aimed at boosting local economies. Another controversial expenditure is over $200,000 spent on drag queen shows in New York City schools.
“It’s time to prioritize the interests of New York taxpayers and ensure that their money is used effectively,” Senator Walczyk concluded.
