Assemblyman Scott Gray of Watertown has released the latest episode of his program, “The Gray Area,” where he provided updates from Albany on various legislative initiatives. The focus included a new bill aimed at regulating battery energy storage facilities in response to the 2023 Chaumont fire, increasing support for nuclear energy, and legislation to restrict drone use over schools and critical infrastructure.
During a recent press conference, Gray expressed his support for Assembly bill A.6955. This bill is designed to regulate the siting and decommissioning of battery storage facilities following the Chaumont fire incident. “This bill puts safety first,” stated Gray. “It ensures battery storage projects are placed in appropriate industrial settings and gives local governments the control they’re guaranteed under the state constitution.” Chaumont Fire Chief Will Lipczynski, who was present at the event, added perspective from his firsthand experience with the fire.
Gray also discussed survey results from his district, highlighting that affordability is a top concern among constituents. He noted growing interest in advanced nuclear technologies like small modular reactors as clean, reliable, and cost-effective energy solutions. The survey indicated 50% support for nuclear energy while identifying hydro and natural gas as the most reliable sources.
Additionally, the Assembly passed A.4944, a bill prohibiting drone use over schoolyards and critical infrastructure. “This legislation is very important for protecting students and safeguarding sites like Fort Drum and our border crossings,” said Gray.
Gray welcomed Aveline Hellings from LaFargeville Central School to shadow him at the Capitol through a League of Women Voters program. He praised her involvement in government as part of her development as a student leader.
In other updates, Gray mentioned the SUNY Chancellor’s annual address and this week’s SUNY Showcase celebrating New York colleges’ work. He highlighted Canton’s leadership in innovation and opportunity.
Concluding his update, Gray encouraged viewers to watch next week’s episode of “The Gray Area” for more information on issues that matter to them. He invited constituents to reach out with questions or concerns.
