Assemblyman Scott Gray has voiced his concerns regarding two legislative bills aimed at reforming corrections and public safety transparency. In the latest edition of “The Gray Area,” Gray critiques Assembly bill A.8871, which targets reforms within the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS). He argues that while the bill aims to improve transparency, it fails to address significant operational and workforce issues affecting safety, morale, and accountability in New York’s correctional facilities.
Gray also explains his decision to vote against the Keep Police Radio Public Act (A.3516). While he acknowledges the importance of transparency and access to public safety information, he points out unresolved security concerns and potential risks for first responders. “I support transparency, but this bill risks officer and victim safety,” said Gray. He advocates for a brief transmission delay to allow police adequate time to respond securely before broadcasting details.
The assemblyman criticizes the Omnibus Prison Reform bill for being one-sided, stating it does not sufficiently tackle the real issues within prisons. “This bill treats correction officers as the problem, rather than addressing the real issues inside our prisons,” he remarked, noting its failure to consider safety concerns and staffing shortages.
Gray invites viewers to stay informed through future episodes of “The Gray Area,” encouraging them to contact his office with any questions or concerns.
