Assemblyman Scott Gray, representing Watertown, discussed key issues affecting the North Country in a recent interview with Assembly Radio-TV Producer Ted Flint. The conversation covered topics such as trade relations with Canada, border security measures, and the upcoming special election for New York’s 21st Congressional District.
Gray emphasized a significant trade and border security agreement between the United States and Canada. He noted Canada’s $1.3 billion investment aimed at enhancing border security through drones, Black Hawk helicopters, and strike teams to address illegal crossings, drug trafficking, and human smuggling. Highlighting the economic ties between Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties and Canada—with exports exceeding $300 million annually—Gray stressed the need to balance security concerns with economic interests.
The assemblyman also addressed the forthcoming special election for New York’s 21st Congressional District. He opposed any attempts to delay it, citing the necessity of federal representation for Fort Drum, which is New York’s largest single-site employer with a $2 billion economic impact. Gray criticized cost-saving arguments against holding the election promptly, pointing out that they are unjustifiable given this year’s proposed state budget of $252 billion.
