Assemblyman Scott Gray of Watertown discussed key issues in the latest episode of his show, “The Gray Area.” The topics included a potential ban on flavored nicotine products, the New York state budget, and a recent investigation in Sackets Harbor.
Gray addressed the state budget’s delay, stating, “There’s nothing new to report on the budget. It remains late—it was due April 1—and we are currently governing through paralysis.” He added that they are using a third extender to maintain government operations while negotiations continue between the governor and the Legislature.
On the topic of legislation A.141, seeking to ban ZYN nicotine pouches, Gray explained, “Initially, I supported the ban… But after receiving extensive feedback from the business community, which raised concerns about black market risks and regulatory integrity, it became clear the issue was more complex.” The bill was removed due to bipartisan opposition.
Regarding the Sackets Harbor investigation, Gray thanked the community for their advocacy and emphasized the need for law enforcement independence, stating: “This was a criminal investigation involving children as potential victims or witnesses to a serious crime. Law enforcement must be allowed to do their job without interference from protests or public pressure.”
Gray also celebrated the visit of the LaFargeville Lady Red Knights, the Class D State Championship title holders, to the Capitol. “The Lady Red Knights are a tremendous group of young athletes, and it was an honor to roll out the red carpet for them in Albany,” he said.
He recognized West Point Day, mentioning local cadet Anthony Tejkl from Theresa, and expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming Fort Drum Day, celebrating members of the 10th Mountain Division.
Gray discussed a meeting on advanced nuclear technology’s role in New York’s clean energy future. “Companies like Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Micron are investing in nuclear innovation. It’s a reliable, clean and economically promising energy source, and we’re continuing to explore how New York can lead in this space,” he noted.
